CHAPTER 7: ACADEMIC INTEGRITY & PERFORMANCE.

Students especially in university will get more an assignment or homework that they get form their lecturer. Sometimes, their assignment must get some research to do by themselves either at library nor research in web. Unfortunately, not all students will get their research by themselves, maybe they will pay their friend to finish their assignment or just copy their friend's work which is called plagiarism. From there, we knows that integrity effects to your assignment including lecturer in this problem if they are honest or not when they mark student's paper.

Plagiarism is copying the work of others, especially students or taking other people's ideas from various sources such as the internet. It is not based on that when work by ourselves.

The way you want to avoid from plagiarism is you must have reference. You must find reference with make some research at library to find some source for your reference. Compare to novel which is totally different because novelist has their own ideas while student must find source by them self to make their assignment.

There is a way for lecturer to detect if their students steal an idea from another person or they make their assignment by themselves. The lecturer use Turnitin web which is lecturer can measure the student's assignment if their work has a similar with other people's idea or not. So, it easier for lecturer to check the assignment :)

In case if the similarity of student's assignment with other resources is more than 30%, the student's must re-do back their assignment by themselves using their own resources that they have found.

CHAPTER 5: MEMORY LEARNING & IMPROVING CONCENTRATION.

FOCUSES:

  • Understanding memory processes.
  • Memory strategies.
  • Understanding concentration.

There are many ways for student to learn, memorize and concentrate on studies according to their respective comforts. This is important because we need to test our own ability to study because everyone has a disorder. certain part of student can catch up on that subject very well while the rest is slow pick up. So, there are many ways for them to explore, which is tips that is suitable for them to get focus and study in comfortable ways.

Learning pyramid - 90%

Make sure that we make a discussion with friends because we can refresh back what we are     learning during a lecture. So, we can be more understand on what we have got from our lecturer. Moreover, we can also remember and memorize on that subject so well. So, we are actually have done a right way to improve our studies.

However, there are still 10% left which is unseen mistakes or unexpected situation where student can't even know where does their fault when they have put their full of effort on their studies. Sometimes this situation can become true where the student didn't get the best result compared to their effort.

In islam, we believe in god's hand that after we have put our full of effort during studies, we knew that our god which is Allah is the best planner. He know what is the best for His servant. As an islam, we just keep praying and stay be close to God because all of the result based on our effort and His decision. The success is come slow or fast is just decided by Him. We as a servant just put a full trust on Him.

Memory VS Brain.

Memory is our ability to store, retain, and especially recall information and past experiences in the human brain. Memory also is the sum total of what we remember, and gives us the capability to learn and adapt from previous experiences as well as to build relationships. It is ability to remember past experiences, and the power or process of recalling to mind previously learned facts, experiences, impressions, skills and habits. It is the store of things learned and retained from our activity or experience, as evidenced by modification of structure or behavior, or by recall and recognition.

Sometimes memory has an increase and decrease based on that person how they handle their memory or ability to save their memory. Memory also has short-term and long-term memory.

Moreover, brain is an organ where its the boss of your body, it controls just about everything you do, even you're asleep. your memory lives in the cerebrum which is both short-term memory (what you ate for your dinner last night) and long-term memory (the name of your new friends that you just met 2 months ago at carnival).

In the conclusion, brain is an organ that places many human's memory. You will forget your memory when you forget, had a terrible an accident until your memory loss, lack of your focus in certain situation, age factor is too old and others.

Memory strategies.

  • Acrostics
  • Mnemonics
  • Acronyms
  • Imagery
  • Organizational strategies
SQ3R
Survey: Survey to get rough idea about the topic.
Question: Ask several questions to yourself regarding to the topic.
Example:
Read: Read books from library with much detail to find the answer to your question.
Recite: Recite your readings by summarize everything into a simple note that you can easily                           understand.
Review: Read back the notes if you have free time so that you can always remain fresh about that topic.

HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR STRATEGY ?

  • Space practice: Studying the new information over time is better for long-term memory (good).
  • Massed practice: Doing the same thing over and over again. Short-term memory (not good).
Concentration VS Breaking concentration

Concentration: 1) Set a positive minded.
                          2) Organize your mind.
                          3) Use strategies.
                          4) Deal with stress or distraction.

Breaking Concentration: 1) Distraction by personal or family problems.
                                         2) Lack of interest.
                                         3) Lack of positive vibes.
                                         4) Lack of attention.

This is an example for mind maps of mine. You can create by your own creatively.

Learn is start with yourself first !

Learn until when you're too old.

CHAPTER 2 : GOAL SETTING & LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

What is goal ?

Goal setting is the object of a person's ambition or effort: an aim or desired result. It also can be called as the destination of a journey or a point.

This particular topic will focus on :
  1. Characteristic of goal
  2. Academic & personal goals
  3. Writing effective goal statements

Goals are important in varsity life because they help motivate you to do work, attend classes and study for exam. We can actually improve your academic performance in university by learning to set goals that motivate you to do well in the future. Goals are the ends towards which we direct our effort.

If we want to success, we must set our own goals. Without goals, we are lacked focus and direction. Goal setting is not just only we list our own goals then try to achieve it. It related with our life when sometimes we need to sacrifice something for achieve our goals. All about our goals is on our hand. Either we success or not is on our decision.

To achieve our goals, we can't only set it just to say "i want". Goal setting is a process that starts with careful consideration of what you want to achieve, and ends with a lot of hard work and sacrifice to actually do and achieve it.

Our goals should be :

CHARACTERISTIC OF GOALS

  • Goals should be self chosen.
  • It must be moderately challenging.
  • It should be realistic.
  • It can measurable.
  • It must be specific
  • It must have a finite (having limits or bounds)
  • Goals must be positive.
ACADEMIC GOALS VS PERSONAL GOAL
  1. Academic goals.
  • Get pointer 3.3 and above.
  • Learn korean language.
  • Get dean list at least 2 / 3 times in diploma level.
      2. Personal goals.
  • Do a part time job for my own experience.
  • Travel to Korea.
  • Be close to God.
  • Give my parents some money after i have got a job.
  • Take my family to do haji or umrah.
Importance for both and well balanced for academic and personal goals. We must disciplined our self and put a lot of effort for make our goals succeed. It is because these two goals is important
in our life. We cannot focus on just one goal just because we give up.

In islam, we are in context world and hereafter. We need them both because in our living for example, we need money to buy a books for our own knowledge. We must have a good communication with society for us to give a dakwah. All these mission to get an akhirat, we must have an acknowledge. If we don't get them both, we are nothing.

How to achieves your goals ?

Step 1: Write what you want to achieve.

Step 2: Write the obstacles that you must faces.

Step 3: Write source around you.

Step 4: Review and revise your goals.

Step 5: Polish your goal statement.

This is an example of how i do my own goals.

You achieve or not your goals is put on your decision.

Be positve and make your goals come true.

CHAPTER 1: GETTING READY TO LEARN

Last Wednesday, we had a briefing with Dr. Fauzi Azmi about the first chapter of study skills as written in the main tittle above. This subject is special for us especially for our batch to introduce a student a basic study skills for them to learn in varsity life. He discussed about the differences between school and college. Some might still not acknowledge about university because we have only been here at university for about 2 weeks. Basically, we spend less time in class and have to do more reading on our own instead of depending on lecturer. One of the most important thing is we have to alert about the due dates and exam cause it might not be reminded. If students are not alert and focusing on what lecturer give a talk about certain subject, the student might be loss on that subject. At the end, the student is feel pressured and lead to stress because they have to pickup back and refresh the subject in the short term that known as short-term memory which is not good for student to follow this way.

Moreover, different student have a different learning style. Some student must do a note for them to understand better while some student can study well even it is a last minute or being under pressured. Even under pressured, if that is their style, we cannot deny them on how the way they study because we know that every student has their own style to study. However, we should not copy our friend learning style just because she or he is one of the best student. We should discover more about ourselves on how we are able to study efficiently. We can try counselling service to discover the best way and suitable for ourselves to study. Stop procrastinating and make an effort to be the best among the best because we know everyone wants to be a successful person and everyone can be the on who is success and educated person. That is a parent's hope that wants to see their child to be a successful person one day.
